Show Abstract
The facts that there are few women in physics and their presence decreases at each higher level in the hierarchy are evidence that women physicists face challenges in launching and pursuing a successful physics career. In four parallel discussion groups led and recorded by the coauthors, about 80 of the conference participants discussed the issues involved, shared proven solutions, and brainstormed other possible strategies. This paper summarizes the results of the discussions, emphasizing useful advice for aspiring women physicists and those interested in facilitating their retention and advancement. © 2002 American Institute of Physics

The paucity of women physicists in positions of influence worldwide has implications for industry, government, and academia, as well as for the future of the profession itself. Women from more than 45 countries discussed the importance of having women in leadership positions and shared their experiences and successes. While implementation will differ among countries, we report a set of recommendations addressing the preparation of women for leadership, the selection process, and the responsibilities of institutions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics

Show Abstract
It is well known that in physics the ratio of women to men decreases dramatically up the academic ladder. For the relatively few women who succeed in finding a physics career, the institutional environment is often not conducive to professional advancement, and may even be hostile. About 60 conference delegates in three group sessions discussed the problems encountered in various countries. We summarize the issues raised and recommendations for improving the institutional structure and climate for women in physics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics

There is a widespread notion that there are more women physicists in some parts of the world, such as in southern Europe. We address the questions of to what extent this is true and for what reasons women are more successful in climbing the academic ladder in certain countries. We summarize the discussion sessions, present the recommendations that emerged, and suggest what can be learned from regional differences. © 2002 American Institute of Physics

Show Abstract
The considerable challenges involved in balancing family and career have been identified as critical factors in the underrepresentation of women in physics worldwide. We review what were seen in discussion groups at the International Conference on Women in Physics to be the dominant issues for balancing family and career. We summarize the discussions and possible solutions (when possible solutions were found). © 2002 American Institute of Physics

Show Abstract
The Working Group on Women in Physics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) subcontracted with the Statistical Research Center of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to conduct an international study on women in physics. This study had two parts. First, we conducted a benchmarking study to identify reliable sources and collect data on the representation of women in physics in as many IUPAP member countries as possible. Second, we conducted an international survey of individual women physicists. The survey addressed issues related to both education and employment. On the education side, we asked about experiences and critical incidents from secondary school through the highest degree earned. On the employment side, we asked about how the respondents’ careers had evolved and their self‐assessment of how well their careers had progressed. In addition, the questionnaire also addressed issues that cut across education and employment, such as the impact of marriage and children, the factors that contributed the most toward the success they had achieved to date, and suggestions for what could be done to improve the situation of women physicists. © 2002 American Institute of Physics
